Dr. Walter Earl Fluker, who served as the Alonzo L. McDonald Family Chair on the Life and Teachings of Jesus and Their Impact on Culture at Candler in spring 2019, has joined the Candler faculty as Dean’s Professor of Spirituality, Ethics, and Leadership. He is Professor Emeritus and the former Martin Luther King, Jr. Professor of Ethical Leadership, the editor of the Howard Thurman Papers Project and the Director of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Initiative for the Development of Ethical Leadership at Boston University School of Theology. 

Dr. Luther E. Smith Jr.'s current research focuses on the writings and correspondence of Howard Thurman, advocacy on behalf of children, and a spirituality of hope. Smith is an ordained elder in the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. 

Rev. Dr. Shively T. J. Smith serves as Assistant Professor of New Testament at Boston University School of Theology (Boston, MA). She completed her PhD in New Testament Studies at Emory University, publishing her first book called, Strangers to Family: Diaspora and First Peter’s Invention of God’s Household with Baylor University Press. She is completing a commentary on Second Peter for SBL Press and several articles on Diaspora in the New Testament. 

Peter Eisenstadt is an affiliate scholar in the history department at Clemson University. He received his doctorate in history from New York University and is the author of Against the Hounds of Hell: A Life of Howard Thurman, and the associate editor of the five volumes of the Papers of Howard Washington Thurman. With Walter Earl Fluker, he is co-editor of the multi-volume Walking with God: The Sermon Series of Howard Thurman, and co-authorwith Quinton Dixie, of Visions of a Better World: Howard Thurman’s Pilgrimage to India and the Origins of African American Nonviolence.
